I’ve curated a list of Carrot and Clover’s favourite local bunny products. Including toys, boredom busters, bunny-safe food and snack products, which I hope you’ll find helpful and useful. All of the products I’ve listed have been tried and tested and quality approved by Carrot and Clover themselves.
Finding and sourcing great quality, bunny-safe, healthy and locally produced bunny products can be difficult. When I first became a bunny parent, it took a lot of research, trial and error to source and find the right (and affordable) products for my bunnies.
What I found was that most of the bunny-related products and toys found in pet shops are imported and are extremely expensive. Some of them aren’t even made from bunny-safe materials!
Clover in particular has dental issues and most of these products listed are great for dental health. So if you have a bunny that doesn’t like or refuses to eat hay, then I highly recommend the various willow products.
A lot of the local bunny products mentioned also contain willow, which is a wonder plant for rabbits. Chanel, owner of Pinky’s Omnoms, has this to say about the benefits of willow:
“The leaves have a high protein content, similar to alfalfa that makes the base for commercial rabbit feed. The natural form of aspirin in the woody cuttings promotes good health, and the wood also has anti-parasitic properties”.
Lauren’s tip: if you want to prevent your rabbit from becoming a destructobun, try your hand at making fun, cheap bunny toys with my DIY bunny toy series.
This was the first local supplier that I found and have been buying their products for a while now. They specialise in supplying food, hay and enrichment toys for bunnies, chinchillas and guinea pigs. Carrot and Clover absolutely LOVE their willow balls, willow rings and willow leaves & sticks snacks. I have to mention that their prices are incredible. You can really order quite a lot for a small investment.
Lauren’s tip: watch their Facebook page for when they announce stock arrivals. Their products are so popular they tend to sell out quite quickly at the beginning of the month.
These are perfect for hanging up individually just within reach to promote standing and stretching which is great exercise.” – Njom Njoms
Carrot and Clover really enjoy the willow balls. They roll them around, throw them around and love to chew on them. R32 per willow ball. It’s worth mentioning that they also have mini willow balls. These are around 6cm x 6cm and only R17 per mini ball.
Carrot is pretty much obsessed with the willow sticks, which come in a bundle and last forever. I leave them around the house and pop them into their hutch so that he can chew and play with them overnight or if I’m away from the house for a couple of hours. R29 for 150 grams, which is a lot.
Willow leaves and sticks snack
Called Willow Play n Nibble on their website, this is a great product. It comes in a little cardboard box filled with dried willow leaves and sticks. This is such a healthy snack and my buns really love the crunchiness of the dried leaves. R32 for a container that’s the size of a burger takeaway box.
I love the fact that with every purchase, there is a personalised hand-written note from the owners. This is such a unique touch and really goes a long way in delighting customers. This is the type of service that you get from local, small businesses which keep people coming back again and again.
Based in Cape Town, Willowlicious is an online pet store, providing local bunny products with a focus on healthy diets for small animals. They deliver countrywide, and ordering anything from their online shop is super easy. Prices are affordable averaging at around R50 for a bag of their healthy organic snacks. They last forever as you just sprinkle a bit over your bunny’s food (around 1 Tablespoon per day).
In a bid to get Carrot and Clover’s diet as healthy as possible, I tried out their extremely interesting, and organic food toppers.
In particular, I highly recommend their Dandelion Root snack, packed with vitamins A, C, D, B complex, zinc, potassium, iron, copper, manganese and other trace elements. As well as their Willowlicious herb mix which comprises of Marigold Flowers, Red Clover, Rosehip and Hawthorn leaves. This stimulates appetite and aids digestion.
Based in Johannesburg with delivery nationwide, Pinky’s Omnoms offers toys and treats at affordable prices. All ingredients are listed 100% safe and custom-made to your bunny’s needs. What I love about this is that 10% of profits go towards rescues and shelters each month.
I purchased the hay tunnel and willow rings from Pinky’s. Ordering is easy over WhatsApp. The owner, Chanel, is extremely helpful. She will not only advise you on the best products for your rabbits, but will also custom-make your order to your specifications.
The stand out product for me is the hay tunnel. It’s really unique and I haven’t seen anything else like this in the country.
Your buns will have hours of fun running through the tunnel and chewing on the ends. I went one step further and connected the hay tunnel to a standard cat tunnel and some boxes, essentially making a little obstacle course / fun house. Cover with a big scarf or towel to make it darker inside and voila – a DIY fun course for your buns. This is a must-try product!
Hay Tunnels and Hidey Houses, what are they good for? Firstly they are a great boredom breaker and toy, that will keep your rabbits entertained for hours on end. It also makes for a great chew toy for the purpose of filing down their teeth which never stop growing. Additionally it’s a great way to get your rabbit to eat hay and get used to the idea of its natural diet and behaviors. – Chanel, Owner of Pinky’s Omnoms
Here are some products that we haven’t tried out yet, but that’s definitely on our wish list.
One of the top sellers on Virtual Bunny Club’s website, this custom made wooden pet bed is R250 and we NEED to try this out! Shut up and take my money!
My next order from Willowlicious is definitely going to include this. Priced at R45, this would be a tasty little treat added to hay for extra foraging fun! As with all Willowlicious products, they contain a wealth of mineral elements. These are crucial for a healthy diet and are a fragrant, colorful addition to hay and herbs.
At R410, this one is a little pricey. Njom Njoms describes this as the perfect addition to your small pet’s habitat, keeping them entertained and active as well as giving them a great spot to chill. Need!!
I proudly support local and urge you to do the same.
If you find something you like, I highly recommend giving one of these local bunny products and suppliers a try and by doing so, you’ll also be helping local small business owners as well stimulating our economy.
Love & binkies.
Bye for now.
